Executive Fiala Unveils BC Transit Fare Boxes and Holiday Hours

BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Executive Barbara Fiala and Broome County Public Transportation Commissioner John Kowalchyk unveiled the new fare boxes on BC Transit buses on Monday, December, 12th. At a news conference held on a bus, the County Executive and Commissioner explained that the new fare boxes were installed to make things more convenient for the riders and more efficient for the BC Transit operation.

“BC Transit is a first rate service that costs county taxpayers quite a bit of money,” said Barbara Fiala, County Executive. “That is why we need to be conscientious about how it is run and make sure the rider is getting the best possible service and the taxpayers are getting the most for their investment.”

“The new system is allowing us additional oversight as well as providing riders with more flexibility,” said John Kowalchyk, BC Public Transportation Commissioner. “With the new cards we are better able to track rider-ship while at the same time giving the rider more value.”

Kowalchyk explains this is because the old bus passes were only good for the month in which they were purchased. The new passes are good for 31 days from the date of activation, a much better value for riders.

On Monday it was also announced that BC Transit would not be running Christmas Day, the day after Christmas, New Year’s Day and the day after New Year’s Day. The Holiday Trolley Schedule was also announced.

Information about the new fare boxes and passes as well as information about BC Transit’s holiday schedule can all be found on the BC Transit Link at www.goBroomeCounty.com.
