Mattress Giveaway for Flood Victims

BINGHAMTON, NY - Flood victims may soon be able to sleep a little sounder. Many people hit hard by the floods had to throw out their mattresses because they were ruined by flood waters. Starting Friday, April 29th, those who lost their mattress in the floods will be able to receive a free used mattress and box spring.
The mattresses are coming from the Dolphin Inn in Apalachin which is replacing all of its beds. While the mattresses are used, they are in good condition and an excellent alternative for those who cannot afford to buy a new mattress.
"We heard about the mattress donation when they contacted the county looking for someone to transport them," said Barbara Fiala, Broome County Executive. "We are providing the trucks and personnel to transport them to the Red Cross and we are very pleased to be able to provide this service."
The mattresses will be picked up by the County, Friday morning. They will be taken to the Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross at 620 East Main St. Endicott. They should be ready and available for flood victims Friday afternoon around 1pm.
Any flood victim interested in a used mattress set, in good condition, should contact the Red Cross at 607.785.7207 or stop by their offices at 620 East Main St. Endicott. You must bring proof of residence with you at the time of pickup. Besides Friday, April 29th, the mattresses will be available at the Red Cross offices, next Monday through Thursday, May 2nd through May 5th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Special thanks goes out to Sam's Club which came up with the idea, Opportunities for Broome, for helping to coordinate the effort and an extra special thanks goes out to Rogers Trucking in Binghamton which has graciously agreed to donate a storage unit to hold the mattresses.
Interested residents should take note that the mattresses and box springs are mostly queen size. There are also a handful of king size mattresses and box springs available as well.
