Green Business Initiative
Earth Day Green Initiative Recognition
The Green Business Initiative was implemented as part of a series of recognition efforts, which began in 2008, to encourage organizations in our community to create a healthier more conscientious environment in Broome County. This program seeks to provide recognition to businesses who implement environmentally friendly methods and practices. The Green Business Initiative was warmly accepted by the organizations and businesses, who were all very excited about being recipients of this new award. There were 22 organizations that were recognized by the Green Business Initiative. Further, another thing to note is that this initiative was not just for private businesses – non-profit groups, governmental and academic entities were also recognized for their environmentally friendly methods and practices.
Broome County Legislature Chairman Mark Whalen expressed an important sentiment at the Press Conference announcing the initiative. He stated that “the community will be better off if we encourage and inspire businesses and organizations to pursue environmentally friendly programs than we would be if we had to investigate, prosecute, and clean up spills and other forms of contamination.”
Chairman Whalen presented the 2008 Green Business Initiative Recognitions at the beginning of the Regular Legislative Session on April 24, 2008 at 5:00 pm in the Legislative Chambers on the sixth floor of the Broome County Office Building.
