Broome County’s KYDS Coalition Spreads the Word on Underage Drinking Parties

(Binghamton, NY) The KYDS Coalition, a Broome County Youth Prevention Partnership organization, is sponsoring a public awareness campaign this month to educate parents and teens on the dangers of Social Hosting, which is the practice of parents hosting underage drinking parties in their homes.
Called Parents Who Host Lose the Most, the campaign provides parents with accurate information about the health risks of underage drinking and the legal consequences of providing alcohol to youth, as well as alternative activities for youth and parents.
April is Alcohol Awareness Month, which makes it a great time for parents to engage their kids in discussions about underage drinking. In Broome Country, more than 85 percent of high school seniors have reported using alcohol. Studies show that adolescents drink less and have fewer alcohol related problems when their parents set clear expectations and maintain open communication about drugs and alcohol.
Social Hosting is illegal. According to New York State law, an adult may be held liable if a minor is injured or dies on their property, for damage to someone else’s property as a result of a party at your residence, or for injuries caused or incurred by those drinking on your property. It also is illegal to serve alcohol to individuals under the age of 21. You may think your house is a safe place for your children and their friends to drink, but allowing such activity sends the message that underage drinking is acceptable, and that the law is meaningless. If you know of an underage drinking party and would like to report it anonymously, call 1-866-UNDER 21. All tips will be investigated.
The KYDS Coalition sponsors programs that enhance community collaboration in order to combat youth substance abuse, ultimately creating a healthier and safer community. This month, the KYDS Coalition is hosting a KYDS Spring Break event on Thursday, April 8, from 1 – 6 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Broome. The event will feature appearances by the Binghamton Senators and BU Bearcats mascots, performances by the Children’s Dance Theatre and the BU Dance Team, giveaways, snacks and more. This event provides a positive opportunity for parents and teens to spend time together in a safe, sober environment.
The KYDS Coalition is also sponsoring its third annual TV commercial contest. Area teens are invited to come up with an idea for a :30 ad focused on how parents can best talk to their kids about underage drinking and/or drug use, and submit it to the KYDS Coalition. The winning idea will be professionally produced by WBNG-TV and given local airtime. For more information on the contest, go to www.kydscoalition.org.
